The Gift of Closure

BY Costandinos

Poem | THEME: A Year of Sorrow

As the mourning sun melts the icicles of disorientation, I gradually escape the mind-numbing stupor that has become my daily companion, releasing me, from the fog of time.

Like Heracles and Theseus before, I walked the Fields of Asphodel, steadying you, as we traversed the rivers of Hades, our last journey together, to your place of eternal rest.

For God had smiled upon you, offering a comforting hand on your passage through the gates of the underworld, a chance to set your heart at ease and make peace with the world.

As the mist of Acheron engulfed us, pain filled my heart at your denial and bitterness, for you resisted the supportive aide of my shoulders, preferring instead, the abyss of discomforts.

Occasionally, tears of remembrance surfaced from the waters of Cocytus, as you hopped between topics of family history, affectionately recalling relatives and friends.

Dogmatically viewing your death, now, or later, to be unjust, you succumbed to the flames of illusion fanned by the waters of Plegathon, grasping at any ember of perceived hope.

Finally, exhausted and parched of throat, you sat upon the shore of Lethe sipping its waters, in seconds, a lifetime of memories dissipated from your eyes, scattering, like ashes in the wind.

As Phlegyas ferried you from the shore of Styx, your anger slowly dissipated in rhythm with its waves, while tears of sorrow washed across my cheeks, I silently bade you a final farewell.

Ascending from Hades, a tinge of sadness lingered in my heart, for the odyssey revealed your true character, exposing your genuine beliefs and a callousness unseen before.

For mirrored within your soul, were layers of contradictions: good, but selfish; caring, but judgmental; insecure, but opinionated; loving, but unable to give the gift of closure.

As the moon light slowly wanes, your image glistens before me, with downcast eyes you extend an olive branch, smiling, for you know that your memory will always burn bright in my heart.
